HOPE - VolunteersHOPE began in response to the needs of our community. Our clients come from a variety of backgrounds and include homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, single parents and working families. All our clients struggle with food insecurity.

In the summer of 2001, Accent on Independence (AOI), a home health company serving people with long-term disabilities, noticed a significant need among AOI clients for an accessible food pantry. The owner of AOI, and a handful of volunteers, began providing food to 15 to 30 individuals per week. Over the next several years, demand for the food share increased among clients and the community. Helping Our People Excel (HOPE) was born in 2007.

HOPE registered as a nonprofit corporation with the State of Colorado in July of 2007. The Center for Independent Living Development (CILD) served as our fiscal agent for HOPE until March 2009, when we received our 501c3.

Our first location was located on West Colfax in Lakewood. The 800 square foot building was small but served us well until we expanded services at the Englewood location.
